Fur and cashmere last for decades when they are looked after well. A few simple habits keep each piece soft, full and true to its shape.

Fur

  • Hang it well. Use a wide, padded hanger and leave space around it in the wardrobe so the fur is never crushed.
  • Let it breathe. Store in a breathable cotton garment bag, never plastic.
  • Keep it cool and dark. Heat and direct sunlight dry the skin and fade the colour. Avoid radiators, heated cars and long hours in strong sun.
  • If it gets wet, shake it gently and let it dry naturally at room temperature, away from any heat. Never use a hairdryer or iron.
  • Avoid perfume and hairspray directly on the fur.
  • Clean with a fur specialist only, ideally once a season.

Cashmere and knitwear

  • Fold, don't hang. Hanging stretches knitwear out of shape.
  • Rest between wears. A day off lets the fibres recover.
  • Pilling is natural. Remove it gently with a cashmere comb.
  • Keep the fur dry. On pieces with fur trims, dry clean only so the fur and the knit are cared for together.

Between seasons

Before putting a piece away for summer, have it cleaned, then store it in a cool, dark, well-ventilated place. Cedar blocks help keep moths away.
